Montblanc 149 Fountain Pen 1959 to 1961. 14C 3 tone F Nib. Works and writes as when NEW. 1st issue FULL size 149 EXACT same size as TODAY's 149.

(1950 to 1959 model 149 are smaller than modern 149 1959/60 to present day). 1959 to 1960 possibly early 1961 in this EXACT form. The model 149 has been Montblancs Flagship pen for over 70 years. It has always been their largest standard model pen. The 149 is for people who like BIG oversize pens.

They are as wide as they are long, the 149 is unmistakeable. The Black and Gold streamline Cigar/Torpedo shape with 3 Gold Ring Bands design is quite literally the very definition of a design classic. From the first ever 146 of 1948-49 this shape and design has changed VERY little over time. It is a signature for Montblanc.

Ask most people to describe a Montblanc and this is the pen they will describe. It also defines business and luxury. In the great fountain pen depression of 1970 to 1990s the Montblanc 149 stood proud often alone still signing big cheques and contracts, still the King of the Hill. Still bearing the Flag and its White Star proudly. The 149 is known as the Diplomat.

This pen is in amazing condition for 60+ years old. It has ZERO cracks, splits or repairs etc. ALL its Yellow Gold plating is perfect with zero Brassing or plate loss etc. Ultra rare to find so clean. Looks to have been used very little in its life if ever.

Always looked after and never abused. This ones as good as they come. The highly sought after (1950-61 only) 18C Fine three Tone nib is also PERFECT with zero damage.

Its Iridium tips are good to last several more lifetimes. Also its highly regarded LINE Fat Ebonite feed is also unique to mid/late 1950s up to 1961.

By 1962 they removed the lines from the feed and changed its shape slightly. These RARE nib and feeds were often stolen/removed for use on 1950s Celluloid 149's as they are the same.

The nib has semi Flex and can write Fine to Bold Broad. These 1st issue plastic (post Celluloid) examples also have screw on White Star Cap Top Section and the cap top Threads are plastic and built into the Cap body.

Only 1950s and early 1960s 149 have this type of Star top section design. The Caps central Ring Band is also unique. The FONT type face used and how they are engraved/imprinted is unique to 1950s and early 1960s. After 1962 they change the FONT slightly and also the depth of imprint itself.

The Barrel is also unique. These 1959-61 examples are one piece from tip of front section to tail end where Piston knob is. By mid 1960s this became 2 piece. By 1970s 3 piece and 4 piece by 90s.

I do have some previous photo showing these differences if it helps explain. Also these 1st issue examples have no key or access to the piston once they were manufactured. They are a real pain to service. Montblanc never expected to ever need to service them so they sealed the piston in place. By 1964 they changed this design to add a key so the piston can easily be screwed out. This pen for sale has superb MINT piston that works perfect as when new. Fills to the max every time.

These pens were the 1st to have plastic single action piston with Silicone Piston head replacing the earlier Metal telescopic Cork head pistons. These plastic single action piston (1959-present day) are based on the simple Pelikan 100 design of 1929.

The original and perhaps superior Montblanc designed metal telescopic pistons were too expensive to continue producing. Also, Celluloid was banned throughout Europe in 1959 for use in manufacture within built up areas.

Celluloid in Liquid form is very HIGHLY flammable. Hence 1959-60 being the changeover year for both Piston and Cap/Barrel Plastic used etc. This example for sale is the 1st of this type.

Overall once in the hand to the naked eye this 60 year old looks positively New Born. Must have belonged to Benjamin Button :. This ones worth breaking the bank for. You will not find a cleaner ALL parts original example. These pens were limited production and in many ways are rarer than 1950s Celluloid examples.

VERY few survive today without any cracks and still working perfect. The item "Montblanc 149 Fountain Pen 1959 to 1961. 18C 3 tone F Nib.
